Flu Vaccinations

BACK TO MAIN INDEX

Flu can be very serious. Like COVID-19, it is caused by a virus and it can lead to illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, which may need treatment in hospital.

There are outbreaks of flu most winters, especially in hospitals and care homes.

Flu Vaccination

Eligibility for the vaccine

Flu is more likely to be serious if you have a long term health condition, are pregnant, or are older. The people at high risk of COVID-19 are generally the same people at increased risk of becoming very ill with flu.

Flu can also be serious for young children.

Last year in Wales, more than a million people got their flu vaccine. That’s around one in every three people.

If any of the following apply to you, even if you feel healthy, you are more likely to get complications from flu if you catch it, and you are advised to have a flu vaccine if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You are aged 50 or over
  • You have a long term health condition that puts you at increased risk from flu
  • ou live in a residential care home

The following groups are also advised to have a flu vaccine to protect them and the people around them:

  • Children aged two and three years old (age on 31 August of this year)
  • Children and young people in school years Reception to Year 11
  • Carers
  • People working directly with patients/clients in health or social care
  • Those who live with someone who has a compromised immune system

Long term Health Conditions

If any of the following apply to you, you are at increased risk of complications from flu even if you feel healthy, and if you get flu it could make your health condition worse. It’s important you have a flu vaccine if:

  • You have diabetes
  • You have a heart problem
  • You have a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including asthma that requires regular steroid inhalers or tablets
  • You have kidney disease (from stage 3)
  • You have lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (and also close contacts of people in this group)
  • You have liver disease
  • You have had a stroke or mini stroke
  • You have a neurological condition
  • You have a no spleen or a problem with it
  • You have a learning disability
  • You are aged 16 or above with a higher body weight (Body Mass Index of 40 or above)

If you are an adult in a risk group, are pregnant, or are aged 50 or over, you can get your flu vaccine at your GP surgery or at some community pharmacies. If you work in health or social care, ask your employer where to get your vaccine.

Care home staff and domiciliary carers should talk to their community pharmacy about getting their flu vaccine.

If your child is eligible for a flu vaccine, you should be contacted by their GP surgery or school nurse. If you think your child might have missed their vaccine, contact the school nurse if they are school aged, or GP surgery if they are not in school.

Most children and young people will get a nasal spray vaccine as this is the best flu vaccine for them. It is a fine mist sprayed up the nose, and can be given from the age of two.

Gall ffliw fod yn ddifrifol iawn. Fel COVID-19, mae'n cael ei achosi gan feirws a gall arwain at salwch fel broncitis a niwmonia, a allai fod angen triniaeth yn yr ysbyty.

Ceir achosion o ffliw bron bob gaeaf, yn enwedig mewn ysbytai a chartrefi gofal.

CYMHWYSTRA AR GYFER Y BRECHLYN

Flu Vaccination

Cymhwystra ar gyfer y brechlyn

Mae'r ffliw yn fwy tebygol o fod yn ddifrifol os oes gennych gyflwr iechyd hirdymor, yn feichiog, neu'n hŷn. Yn gyffredinol, y bobl sy'n wynebu risg uchel o COVID-19 yw'r un bobl sy'n wynebu risg uwch o fynd yn sâl iawn gyda'r ffliw.

Gall ffliw hefyd fod yn ddifrifol i blant ifanc.

Y llynedd yng Nghymru, cafodd mwy na miliwn o bobl eu brechlyn ffliw. Mae hynny tua un o bob tri o bobl.

Os oes unrhyw rai o'r canlynol yn berthnasol i chi, hyd yn oed os ydych yn teimlo'n iach, rydych yn fwy tebygol o gael cymhlethdodau o'r ffliw os byddwch yn ei ddal, ac fe'ch cynghorir i gael brechlyn ffliw os yw'r canlynol yn wir:

  • Rydych yn feichiog
  • Rydych yn 50 oed neu drosodd
  • Mae gennych gyflwr iechyd hirdymor sy'n golygu eich bod yn wynebu risg uwch o'r ffliw
  • Rydych yn byw mewn cartref gofal

Mae'r grwpiau canlynol hefyd yn cael eu cynghori i gael brechlyn ffliw i'w hamddiffyn nhw a'r bobl o'u hamgylch:

  • Plant dwy a thair oed (oedran ar 31 Awst 2021)
  • Plant a phobl ifanc ym mlynyddoedd ysgol o'r Derbyn hyd at Flwyddyn 11
  • Gofalwyr
  • Pobl sy'n gweithio'n uniongyrchol gyda chleifion/chleientiaid ym maes iechyd neu ofal cymdeithasol
  • Y rhai sy'n byw gyda rhywun â system imiwnedd wan

Chyflwr Iechyd Hirdymor

Os oes unrhyw rai o'r canlynol yn berthnasol i chi, rydych yn wynebu risg uwch o gymhlethdodau o'r ffliw hyd yn oed os ydych yn teimlo'n iach, ac os byddwch yn cael y ffliw gallai wneud eich cyflwr iechyd yn waeth. Mae'n bwysig eich bod yn cael brechlyn ffliw os oes gennych unrhyw un o'r canlynol:

  • Diabetes
  • Problem gyda’r galon
  • Cwyn ar y frest neu anawsterau anadlu, gan gynnwys asthma sy'n gofyn am anadlwyr neu dabledi steroid rheolaidd
  • Clefyd yr arennau (o gam 3)
  • Imiwnedd is oherwydd clefyd neu driniaeth (a hefyd cysylltiadau agos pobl yn y grŵp hwn)
  • Clefyd yr afu/iau
  • Rydych wedi cael strôc neu strôc fach
  • Mae gennych gyflwr niwrolegol
  • Nid oes gennych ddueg neu mae gennych broblem gyda'r ddueg
  • Mae gennych anabledd dysgu
  • Rydych yn 16 oed neu drosodd gyda phwysau corff uwch (Mynegai Màs y Corff o 40 neu uwch)

Os ydych chi'n oedolyn mewn grŵp risg, yn feichiog, neu'n 50 oed neu'n hŷn, gallwch gael eich brechlyn ffliw yn eich meddygfa neu mewn rhai fferyllfeydd cymunedol. Os ydych chi'n gweithio ym maes iechyd neu ofal cymdeithasol, gofynnwch i'ch cyflogwr ble i gael eich brechlyn.

Dylai staff cartrefi gofal a gofalwyr cartref siarad â'u fferyllfa gymunedol am gael eu brechlyn ffliw.

Os yw'ch plentyn yn gymwys i gael brechlyn ffliw, dylai eich meddygfa neu nyrs ysgol gysylltu â chi. Os ydych chi'n credu y gallai'ch plentyn fod wedi colli ei frechlyn, cysylltwch â nyrs yr ysgol os yw'n oed ysgol, neu feddygfa teulu os nad yw yn yr ysgol.

Bydd y rhan fwyaf o blant a phobl ifanc yn cael brechlyn chwistrell drwynol gan mai dyma'r brechlyn ffliw gorau iddynt. Mae'n ager ysgafn wedi'i chwistrellu i fyny'r trwyn, a gellir ei roi o ddwy oed.
